World Games 2022

From 7 to 17 July Discover the Games was in Birmingham, Alabama at the World Games 2022. To discover the games and to tell the stories behind the sports and their athletes

In the midst of rising temperatures (36 Celsius/96 Fahrenheit) the city hosts sports like drone racing, lacrosse, muay thai, floorball. Unknown and obscure, just the way we like 'm. We made stories for several Dutch media. All of them published below. And we wrote stories in our discoverblog.

Published articles, audio, video, pictures

For the NOS, the Dutch national broadcaster, we wrote four longreads for their website. By clicking on our pictures below you'll be linked to the stories on NOS.nl. From left to right:

The Games itself / Archery; Mike & Gaby Schloesser / Lacrosse; Haudenosaunee / Korfball; Dutch sport in the USA.

Besides the stories an interview with carom player and winner of the gold medal Dick Jaspers is published.

The sports program on national radio, NOS Langs de Lijn, aired the interview with Jaspers. As well as an audio report about the Dutch sport korfball in the USA (you can listen to it by clicking on the 4th picture above). And an interview with the most decorated athlete at the World Games; Belgian skater and four times gold medal winner Bart Swings.

In Dutch newspaper Trouw, nationwide, two articles were published. One about the olympic dreams and ambitions of many of the sports and the athletes at the World Games.

The other one is the story of the korfballteam from Suriname, the first Surinamese team ever to appear on a multi-sport event.

Below you can read the stories we wrote for Noordhollands Dagblad, a local newspaper for the province of Noord-Holland. About two bowling women from Julianadorp and two Surinamese korfball players from the local club ZKV.

And we wrote three korfball stories for some local editions of Algemeen Dagblad:

  • Laurens Leeuwenhoek, experienced player and one of the flag bearers at the opening ceremony.
  • Sanne van der Werff & Jelmer Jonker, golden couple in the Dutch team and in life.
  • Barbara Brouwer, who retired after the final against Belgium.

And we made so much pictures! A best of selection:
